I earned a PhD in History from the University of Cagliari in 2005. Since 2015, I am Associate Professor of African History at the Department of History and Cultures, University of Bologna, where I teach African History and Indian Ocean History. I was previously employed as researcher at the British Museum in the comparative and collaborative project "Money in Africa".  From 2018 to 2020 I was President of the Association of African Studies in Italy (ASAI).  I am co-editor of the full open access journal Afriche e Orienti. My research has received funding from the Italian Ministry of University and Research, from the Gerda Henkel Foundation and from the European Research Council.
